Thumbs up all those looking forward to Captain Marvel on March 8ᵗʰ

:thumbsup Definitely :thumbsup

Though not as much as End game, for some reason I'm a little sceptical about this one. Though it'll no doubt be a blast.

I've just got back from seeing Captain Mavel, here are my thoughts.

Right away I've got to dispell some myths and really bad publicity, it's an awesome film, Brie Larson made Captain Marvel her role. Does it yell out loud from the pulpit? No, is it all about female entitlement? No, does it empower women in general? Yes and it bloody well should too. Is it women's liberation film? Hmmm. Yes a little, but It's about equality and it's not preachy OK.

Right down to it then.
*** Here be Spoilers ***

Vers (pronounced Veers) is an alien, a Kree, a race that is trying to wipe out insurgent terrorists the Skrull. And while she's definitely talented in combat, she's not allowed to fight battles, she's only allowed to train.
When eventually she does fight, she's captured by the Skrull and has her memory examined where there are constant inconsistencies all over the place. They (Vers and Skrull) eventually fight and they all crash on Earth (C53)

This starts the process of Vers learning that she's really Captain "Avenger" Carol Danvers. Big hint just given there.!!!

During the course of the film we get to see and understand why her memory is wiped and scrambled (by the Kree), with the help of Agent Coulson and Nick Fury, she regains her memory, learns her true power and kicks ass like a true Avenger... only the Avengers aren't a thing yet, making Captain America: The First Avengers erm.. the second Avenger. Technically yes he is the first, but he's really not... you have to see it yourself to understand.

Eventually cpt. Danvers learns who she really is, what her role was meant to be in the war, and how she got her powers. Before all that though, we see Vers who is angry, fearful, and unsure of herself. And I have to say that Brie Larson does an excellent job of convincing us of her frailties. It's a hard thing to do, be just about the most powerful person, thing, alien, being, or whatever in the entire universe, and simultaneously feeling vulnerable.

The action is a little sparse, but it's an origin story and that's what matters most, what fighting there is does help to move the story forward and help to bring Captain Marvel a little more to the surface, the film though is about the story and there are plenty of twists and turns and more than a few revelations along the way.

Captain Marvel is a damn good film, but if you go into it expecting "holier than thou" preaching then I'm happy to say its not like that at all, it's all about the origin story, what little overt empowerment to women shows is that women can be just as tough as men, and that's a good thing.

Overall I seriously enjoyed Captain Marvel, it's a damn good film, a great origin story, that will lead to a brilliant End Game (April 25th can't come soon enough) and another Captain Marvel film that should really let her shine.
