After spending 200+ hours on Astroneer (another brilliant game) I'd had enough, for now at least, version one is due Frebruary 6th and I can't wait, I wanted something new to play. And Subnautica was it.
It's a little slow at first, especially for a first play through, but man is there a LOT of things to do. It's taken me 24 hours and more just to build a simple base, a seamoth and on my way to a prawn suit and cyclops. Plus the tech tree is enormous.
It's also a beautiful game to play.
Your aim is to survive after your interstellar ship, The Aurora, crashes on a water based planet. Your PDA is damaged and only has a few basic blueprints for materials and survival tools. As you wander away from your crashed life pod, you'll find broken pieces of The Aurora and lots of basic materials, and most importantly, more blueprints, allowing you to make more complex tools and equipment.
In my estimation, I'm around 25-30% through the story, part of that story involves finding your ship mates, their technological discoveries, importing this data into your PDA, discoving vast and forgotten alien technology, and trying to find a cure for your alien bacterial infection, an infection that seems to have killed off the ancient and technologically superior aliens. All while avoiding death by starvation, dehydration, and leviathian sea monsters.
So far it's an awesome game with lots of highs and some lows. The lows mostly based on the constant quest for food and water, Once that problem is solved then it's just a matter of heading out in random directions looking for clues and technology to emulate.
Definitely a cracking good game... and did I mention it was free... Thank you Epic. That said, it's worth the £20 entrance fee.
