I really get a kick out of the fact that I am now considered an “indie” again after all these years. I have been making games for nearly 30 years, having built a top-five PC publishing house called Interplay around such major franchises as The Bard’s Tale, Wasteland, Baldur’s Gate, Fallout, Descent and more. In the early days, I developed games for other companies and moved up the food chain to become a publisher so that I could make games “my way.” And here I sit, again readying our first major release in Choplifter HD as a digital publisher and having created the game the way I wanted. Our company tagline at Interplay was “By Gamers. For Gamers” and it is those same values we used in creating Choplifter HD.

Choplifter was a very important game when it was originally released back in 1982 and achieved #1 status at the time. Dan Gorlin, the original creator, really understood the humanness of saving little people from tough situations. It was a great action game for sure, but there was something about saving those little guys. And certainly it just never gets dull blowing things up in a big way! I felt that Choplifter would be a perfect game style to bring back, but fully realized with all the modern gameplay expectations.

I’m not too fond of the word “retro game” since it sometimes conveys an over-reliance on nostalgia. I can assure you we went all out to make this a state-of-the-art game that goes way beyond the goals of the original game. We took some of the industry’s top artists and used the Unreal engine to power an intense over-the-top action experience. The entire team put its heart and soul into the game and it was great to see such passion. In fact, some people might even say we spent too much money when compared to other digital titles, but we believe that quality comes first.

We pit you against over 30 levels of mayhem that introduce a number of variables all the way to the end. You will be commanding three different helicopter types, each with its own set of upgrades. You will need to deal with your guns and keep an eye on their overheating, utilize your missiles intelligently, boosting when necessary, and of course, keep track of your fuel. You will come up against AA guns, RPGs, jets, tanks, snipers, jeeps, hordes of zombies and more. We guarantee to keep you on your toes and even laughing here and there until the very end. You will definitely feel accomplished when you finish this baby!

We proudly announce Choplifter HD will go on sale this January 10th for $15 on PSN. And keep an eye out for free DLC with lots more zombies very soon…

I was given this game to review only because Symonator or InfiniteStates were too busy to do a review, and no one else was even close to volunteering. It is christmas after all. I'm also not a fan of RPGs at all. My poison is battlefield bad company, battlefield 3 M.A.G. Or if I'm pushed, some modern warfare. I did give dark souls a go last week and kind of liked it, but it didn't quite grab me. But as I've been told a few times,

I need to get out of my comfort zone.

So thanks Dave for forcing me to review a game I didn't want too.

My first impression is that this is gonna hurt, it's basically a tower defence game with a large chunk of RPG elements, and it's the RPG bit that confuses the hell out of me. Thankfully though the makers haven't created an RPG game, it's still got some of that at its core, but it's not a full blown role playing game. So I created my character, chose my few perks and headed off into the guts of the game…

The arena. The first level is hard, even on easy it's still going to grief you some (or is it my lack of RPG experience showing?), you really have to play it a few times and level up your character and main weapon, which is easy enough as the MANA you collect is pretty plentyfull. So once you up you rank and skills a little you'll plough through the first arena quickly enough. But when you get to the second area you'll soon know about pwnage, and you'll need to go back to level one and grind your way up some levels. It took me about 4 hours to do it, and a few online games to get enough skill to get through the second stage. But liked said earlier, when it comes to RPGs I'm both a <del>noob and a hater</del>. So give me a break ok.

Strangely enough once I completed Arena 1and 2 arena 3 was a breeze. Arena's 4 and 5 were tough, but not as hard as the first two.

So it's safe to say that I've enjoyed playing this immensely, and I've yet to complete the game, I've enjoyed it so much that I've now bought the iPad and pc versions.

But wait there's more, didn't I mention the online part a bit back? Hell yeah, now that's what I'm talking about, but online isn't the only way to get your multiplayer fix, the game even features 4 player splitscreen. So what difference does it make if it has a multiplayer section? A freeking huge difference, for one, if you're a lower rank and grinding to get to the higher skill levels, you can really rank up quickly. Or if you're a higher rank, you can help others to get there more quickly, beat times, or just rank up your main weapon. But more than anything it it's just brilliant fun watching noobs run around wondering what the hell to do… Noobs like me. Still, it was great fun, and I know that once I've finished the game on this character I'll be trying the other characters to see what defences they build.

Now that reminds me of what this game really is about, it's a tower defence game. Building towers in this game is like many other similar games, its not what you build (well sometimes it is) its mostly WHERE you build. You'll learn pretty quickly where the main horde attacks from, what defences work best, and where they work best. But remember to keep an eye out in different sections to make sure they don't break through. So I hope I've got my point across that I really really love this game, yes the game I didn't want to review, not being an RPG fan I thought I couldn't do it justice. But yes I really really love this game. I've ploughed about 20 hours into it in 3 days, that's more than I would have played if it was a Battlefield game.

Not only that but I want more, I want to complete it on one character then start another to see what that's like. But I also want to play with friends, and so far I've talked Dave, InfiniteStates and possibly Symonator into buy it. Overall if you like RPG games then this is something you'll probably enjoy, if you like tower defence games, then again you'll probably enjoy the added RPG elements. That said the game does have a of niggling little problem, not game breaking problems, but annoying non the less. You can't upgrade your main weapon if you don't have an alternative to switch too. And that's it, that's the only problem, the game is sheer brilliance, it's been a massive hit on the iPad, its been a great hit on steam for the pc, and now it should be another hit on the playstation 3. Now if an RPG hater can love it, then you should too. Get it, add me and we can play online.

Rumours are just phantoms, they dont exist, or are so opaque it's almost as if they're not there. Even I have made some posts regarding the Playstation 4 before it fell into an argument.

So whenever they new consoles arrive, I have some thoughts on what might make them even better than the current gen.

The mistakes made with the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 are obvious to anyone who owns the system(s), on launch day they looked like the business and no one cared.

Xbox 360:

DVD drive, with later support for HD-DVD (total loss for HD-DVD)

RRoD – Microsoft were informed pre-release about fabrication problems leading to faults, Microsoft ignored them and it cost them dearly.

No support for HDMI until much later

So what good things can the Xbox 720 offer?

Microsoft need to embrace a few things from the Sony camp, like blu-ray and cross platform gaming (Vita and to a lesser extent PSP), maybe the new Windows mobile OS will help, but a dedicated portable gaming console could too.

Another good thing Microsoft did, and probably without forethought, launch the Kinect, let people hack it, then release a development kit for Kinect on the PC. Developers for Kinect immediately ran away with it, they loved it and released so many tech demo's that even MS were stunned at what it could do. Thankfully Microsoft let the hackers roll and didn't try to stop them.

So make Kinect part of the default package.

Another thing the fanboys of both side like is knocking the others product. But never allow them to play against one another. That should stop. The game developers host their own game servers, so let PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 owners slug it out on the same server, mix Xbox with Sony players on the same team, or have tournaments: PlayStation vs Xbox, and sure it'll give fanboys fuel for arguments, but the mojority of sane people will probably respect respect one another, or what about this, they may even become friends? (Or am I being naive?).

Stop all the nonsense with Gold LiVE, just give the service away for free!

Get on the 1080p and 3D bandwagon. Microsoft may have arrived late to this party, but this IS the future, so get with the programme. 3D may not have blasted off into outerstellar space, but it's getting there slowly, and the more reasons gamers have to upgrade TV's the more 3D TV's will be sold. This will become a self fullfilling prophecy if everyone jumps onboard.

Embracing the cloud can also only be a good thing, gamesaves you can take to a friends house, or never worry about hardware failures and loosing those precious savegames is a must for any system.

So what about Sony?

So far for Sony only a few things have caused any distress, but they were big problems never the less.

Late to the party – The manufacturing problems with Blu-Ray are long gone, but it stopped the console from launching for nearly 18 months. Sony lost out to Microsoft as people jumped ship from PS2 to Xbox 360, and some people are still there in the other camp.

Very high price console. The Launch console was so expensive people who might have been tempted just shook their head and walked away. £600 IS a huge chunk of change. but with manufacturing processes of Blu-Ray and the Cell CPU at much more efficient levels, the price of the system is now much more favourable.

Backwards compatability. Sony definately lost the plot with the "Emotion Engine", making BC hardware reliant only and more expensive for the console purchase. Considering the power of the Cell CPU and the Nvidia GPU, BC ould be done in software. But this only works at launch when games are thin on the ground. Once the system gets going then people will forget about BC and conentrate on what's current. If the next system is Cell based, and it probably will be, then BC needs to a certainty.

YLOD. It wasn't just the Xbox that showed signs of poor production, so did the PS3, but at least Microsoft had the gumption to admit their mistake and offer free extended warranties. Cheap solder on a mainboard that see's major fluctuations in temperature is never a bright idea, as it only costs pennies per system to improve the quality.

THE HACK!

This nearly cost Sony everything. With rumours floating around, and a lot of those rumours coming from Sony reps, that the Japanese login servers were down due to the tsunami, a lot of people had sympathy for Japan and Sony. Most just hoped something would be done soon. But it sooned turned out to be completely false and an attack on the secure systems were to blame. Still it took Sony Press a couple of weeks to admit the problem, the extent of the hack, and even longer to admit when things will be running again. Vague was the order of the day and it stayed that way until the very day of PSN's relaunch.

In all it took nearly 7 weeks to bring PSN back up, but the damage to repair Sony's reputation will take years to restore, if ever.

So what can Sony do for the future?

Bring the cost of the launch console down to a maximum of £300. Dont forget we are still in a recession and will be for some time to come. But seeing as Sony have sorted manufacturing problems with the Cell CPU and Bluray, this is almost a moot point.

Create a more open system. Since the Playstation 3 was cracked, a lot of homebrew devs have created some amazing software. Another major problem is that small indie devs need to spend upto £4000 on development units just to try writing code. This made inidie developers immediately switch to the much more open and cheap Xbox 360.

Embrace the cloud, but this time for free.

Cross Game Chat, or forget that, in-game chat that works (Battlefield series anyone). Chat just works on the Xbox 360 because Microsoft saw wisdom in adding a small amount of system memory just for that one application.

Borrow hardware from Microsoft. The PlayStation move might look good on paper, but in reality, Kinect is so much better in almost every way imaginable. And when was the last time you actually used your move? Mine is gathering dust under my telly and has been for 4 months.

So there you have it, my thoughts on what could be done to improve both systems in plenty of different ways, and in ways that wont cost a fortune, and could help improve accessability for each console.

If you have any thoughts, post below. I'd love to hear them.

December comes to end the year and a PlayStation Plus content refresh is in order. This update will take place on Wednesday, 7th December and you’ll have the opportunity to grab all the current content until then.

This month we have Tomb Raider: Underworld as our main title included with your subscription. In an ancient ruin on the floor of the Mediterranean Sea, Lara Croft uncovers proof of the Norse underworld and Thor’s mythical hammer. As she attempts to unravel the secrets behind these myths, Lara’s perilous journey leads her toward a forgotten power that, if unleashed, could lay waste to all civilization. Serious business, no?

Anyway, while you’re raiding tombs in a low-cut top, make sure you also check out your other offers this month, including Cool Boarders for PSone, and your requisite minis. From the 14th December you’ll also be able to grab a copy of Marvel Pinball from Zen Studios at no extra cost. If flippers are your thing and you like the game, we’ve also secured 50% off the first two DLC packs for you too.

Speaking of DLC – the Deadline DLC Pack for Split/Second: Velocity is included at no extra cost in your Plus subscription this month. Just in case you don’t already own the criminally underrated Split/Second, we’ve also got 50% off the digital version available from the Store throughout December.

Alongside the other bits and pieces this month, we’ve also got a Goldeneye 007: Reloaded demo for you a week before it hits the rest of the Store on the 14th, so enjoy your early playtest of Bond’s latest PS3 outing.

Finally, from this week we’re implementing a new category in Plus which brings us in line with SCEA – we’ll be offering a selection of Full Game Title trials, starting with around 20 titles available on the Store which we’ll expand as time goes on. As usual, you’ll have an hour to try out each title and then you’ll have the option to unlock the full game if you want to keep playing.

That’s all for now, you might find a few extra bits and pieces come to light throughout the month – don’t forget that if you’re a new subscriber to take advantage of the ’12 Gifts of Christmas’ with a new title from the Plus back catalogue available every 48 hours. What’s more, keep an eye on the main Store’s ’12 Deals of Christmas’ promotion, with additional discounts available for Plus members throughout the month.

Bye for now!

Just over a year after winning several exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) anti-circumvention provisions (which saw jailbreaking cell phones acknowledged as fair use), the Electronic Frontier Foundation is now trying to expand those exemptions. This time around it’s interested in gaining something similar for those who want to mod their videogame consoles.

A request for this, along with three other issues, was filed this week. Exemptions are considered by the Copyright Office during a rulemaking process which takes place every three years. The exemption is for the DMCA’s “prohibitions on ‘circumventing’ digital rights management (DRM) and ‘other technical protection measures’ used to protect copyrighted works.” The EFF and many others feel these rules are not used properly, hence the need to seek this out in the first place.

“The DMCA is supposed to block copyright infringement. But instead it can be misused to threaten creators, innovators, and consumers, discouraging them from making full and fair use of their own property,” said EFF Intellectual Property Director Corynne McSherry. “Hobbyists and tinkerers who want to modify their phones or video game consoles to run software programs of their choice deserve protection under the law. So do artists and critics who use short excerpts of video content to create new works of commentary and criticism. Copyright law shouldn’t be stifling such uses – it should be encouraging them.”

The filing, which can be read its entirety here (PDF), summarizes the issue: “Modern video game consoles are increasingly sophisticated computing devices. They are capable of running not only games, but entire computer operating systems. However, all three major video game manufacturers — Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo — have deployed technical restrictions that force console purchasers to limit their operating systems and software exclusively to vendor-approved offerings, even where there is no evidence that other options will infringe copyrights.

“This severely constrains not only consumer choice and the value of the console to its owner, but also the incentives for independent developers to create copyrightable systems and software that would expand the marketplace for these devices and promote the progress of science and the useful arts in these areas.”

It goes on to outline how the PlayStation 3 originally offered Linux (and other third-party OS) support before it was removed in a firmware update early last year.

“To overcome this sudden and dramatic limitation and restore their consoles to full functionality, console owners, hobbyists, security experts, and software developers created methods of jailbreaking to decrypt and modify the PS3′s firmware to enable it to interoperate with lawfully obtained third-party operating systems and software. However, their efforts to gain control over the device have occurred under the threat of litigation by console manufacturers.”

The EFF is non-profit group founded in 1990 that defends consumers’ digital rights. If its name sounds familiar, it might be because it’s one of two charities, along with Child’s Play, you can choose to send money to when purchasing one of the Humble Indie Bundle promotions, including the current Humble Introversion Bundle.

Should it succeed, as we would hope, it would be good news for those wishing to run homebrew games on their systems, install third-party operating systems on PS3, and play a European copy of Xenoblade Chronicles on a North American Wii (although that won’t be an issue for much longer).

Should the EFF win the exemptions it is seeking, it won’t be for almost another year that we find out. Hearings won’t take place until the spring and a decision won’t come until next October.
