EA have now announced when we can expect to see the new maps, vehicles, and weapons that are all included in this add-on, and we won’t be waiting long.

December 6th is the date they gave us for both the Americas and Europe, although since the PlayStation Store updates a day later in Europe, it may actually be the 7th before it shows up in your region.

Speaking of the PlayStation Store, that’s the only place you’ll be able to find it for the first week of release, per the previously announced agreement EA made with Sony to release all add-ons on the PS3 first. You can expect the Xbox 360 and PC versions to launch the following week on the 13th. Regardless of platform, the expansion will be free if you purchased the Limited Edition of the Battlefield 3.

Has anyone had a chance to play the PC or PS3 versions of the game since the patch went live on those platforms?

So Battlefield 3 has been out for a couple of weeks now, and the singleplayer has had mixed reviews, from astounding to disjointed, but how does the multiplayer stack up?

So as you can see from the above screenshot, the game looks lovely. There are however some serious flaws in the multiplayer game.

Overall it’s still first and foremost a Battlefield game, it requires strategy and teamwork to complete and win a round, what ever flavour you play: Rush, Conquest, Squad Rush, Team Deathmatch, or Squad Death Metch. Big maps and upto 24 players per server can make for some astounding games, myself and RavingZombie have had some excellent rush and conquest games this weekend. Sometimes funny, sometimes frustrating, but never boring, and thanks to mine and Raving’s excellent gameplay, we’ve usually won.

The Game Godes:
Rush – my favourite
Gold Rush in Battlefield: Bad Company and Rush in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3 are game modes introduced in the Bad Company series. The objective of the game is for the attacking team to destroy the defending team’s crates (gold crates in Battlefield: Bad Company, M-COM Stations in Battlefield: Bad Company 2). Attackers receive reinforcement tickets at the start of the game and will lose if they run out of tickets. The reinforcement tickets are restored by destroying both crates at one defending base. Each defender team’s base has a pair of crates, and when both objectives have been destroyed, the map is expanded, making room for a new base with a new set of crates where the defenders have to fall back. This process is repeated until the last defending base is lost.

Conquest:
The aim of the Conquest game mode is to capture neutral (usually white or no-flag) or enemy flags and hold them. Once captured, flags serves as a spawn point for both infantry and vehicles. Teams must hold flags and kill opposing team members to reduce the enemy ticket count. Once a team ticket count is reduced to zero, the other team wins. In Battlefield 1942, ticket loss depends on the type of Conquest mode:

Head-On – Enemy tickets start reducing once a team holds over half of the map’s flags
Assault – Enemy tickets only reduce once every flag on a map has been captured by a team

Ticket Loss

Ticket loss, also referred to as ticket bleeding, is the state where a team constantly loses reinforcement tickets due to the opposing team holding more or all flags. This is a strategy employed by many teams in order to avoid lengthy periods of fighting, although if the current team re-captured flags, the ticket loss may be incurred on the opposing team.
History

Conquest mode made its popular debut in Battlefield 1942 and featured as a staple online game mode, featuring in every Battlefield game. However, this trend was broken with the release of Battlefield: Bad Company, although a conquest mode was quickly released as a free downloadable content. It returned in Battlefield 1943 and as one of the many game modes of Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Along with rush, it is the premier game mode for Battlefield 3. Also, Conquest Assault will be included for maps in the Back to Karkand map pack for Battlefield 3 in December.
Trivia

Conquest was the only game mode in Battlefield games until “Capture The Flag” was introduced in Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, although there were several variants in Battlefield 2.
A variant of the Conquest game mode called “Titan” was introduced in Battlefield 2142, in which both teams compete to take and hold missile silos instead of flags. This change added a more story-like appearance to the gameplay of the Conquest game-mode, with desperate fighting inside the Titans ensuing once one team gains entry to the opposing team’s Titan.
Conquest mode in Battlefield Play4Free works much more differently than previous games. Instead of having “ticket bleeding” as in previous games, now there’s a score limit that one team must reach just by holding any number of flags, in which more flags held by one team earns them more points.

Squad Rush: My other Favourite
Same as Rush but smaller…
Up to 4 players per team (1 Squad).
1 M-COM Station per base.
Maps are much smaller than on Rush.
Only 20 reinforcement tickets for attackers.
Exclusion of any vehicles

Team Death Match:
This mode has a player cap of 24 on all platforms, meaning there will be two teams of 12 pitted against each other. The mode is entirely isolated from use of any vehicle, like Squad Rush. The objective of the game mode is to reach a certain amount of kills, like in Squad Deathmatch.

Squad Deathmatch:
In this game type, 4 squads (labeled Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta) will fight each other on a map. The first team to achieve 50 enemy kills wins the match. Instead of spawning in a set base like in Rush or Conquest, Squad Deathmatch has players spawn in either a random spawn point around the map or on their squadmates. There is also an IFV – always an M3A3 Bradley – in the center or near the center of the map and it is labeled on the HUD and the minimap with an icon marking its location.

Gameplay relies on good teamwork for each team to play their best. A well balanced squad that communicates well has the best chance at winning a round, where as a team full of Recon Kit wielders may suffer, but this is not always the case. The light tank proves very useful to the squad that decides to capture it as it has three machine gun (the top mounted M2 Browning and the two side-mounted firing ports) positions to cover the vehicle as the driver moves about toting the main 30mm chain gun. It is recommended that each squad-mate has a different Vehicle Specialization, with the driver having an active Specialization like the Alternate Weapon Package or the Smoke Countermeasures Package.

So now the important bit: The Problems With Battlefield 3

1. Unlocks:
The unlocks are great and add a huge amount of choice to the game, but it’s flawed and in a bad way.
You start out with a simple main weapon in all the varying classes, both the USA and PLR have different weapons too, making the range of availabe unlocks absolutely massive. The problem is that when you play as one side (USA assault for example), you’ll start to unlock some goodies like heavy barrel (increased damage and vertical recoil), red dot, holo scope, acog 4x scope, grenade launcher, sniper scope and more.
The problem is when you change sides to PLR, you have to unlock everything again! Change main weapon – yep you guessed it, you have to unlock everything again, change class… unlock everything again.
This makes for tens of thousands of weapon combinations, but it also makes changing weapon type or class very very frustrating.

2. Squad System:
Finding a decent server with space for one or more friends is a nightmare, try finding a server with free space for four people where you are all in the same squad, hell, getting on the same team is a challenge on it’s own. This is where squad play falls down, DICE would be better advised to rent servers to console owners, at least this way you can kick or switch players and make room for you and friends.

3. Voice chat:
Some improvements have been made since the realease of the game, but talking to friends in the same squad is sometimes impossible.

4. Lag:
Again improvements have been made by DICE to reduce the rubberbanding, but it’s still not entirely perfect, and the more players you join with (squad play) the more lag you will get.

5. Helicopters, Jets and land vehicles:
Helicopters were hard to control in Bad Company 2, and they’re even worse, much worse in Battlefield 3. It’s a common sight to see a pilot take off with a chopper full of people and crash within seconds killing everyone on board. Jets are easier to control, but are severly limited to basic weapons and gadgets until you get enough kills to add extra’s. It’s a similar system to the unlock system for various classes and loadouts. You have to unlock as much as you can for one vehicle, then do it all again for other vehicles. Same with tanks and IFV’s. The unlocks take time, then you have to do it for the other team.

6. Bullet Damage:
This is far too high, and more often than not you’ll die and not know where the kill came from, let alone have time to react and defend yourself. So be prepared to die… A LOT.
This causes a problem in that people will camp rather than run/rush around trying to support team members.

Overall:
While the game is still fun to play, it’s very frustrating for all the reasons listed above, and the biggest problem… issues 1, 5 and 6 will never be fixed, DICE wanted the game this way and this is how it will stay.
This wont stop me from playing the game, but I definitely wont play it as much as Bad Company 1 or 2, and if I dont play it as much, most other people will loose interest too.

Over and out. Dazbobaby: Die hard battlefield fan.

He’s on fire!

When I was young I played a ton of NBA Hangtime on my Super Nintendo, I loved it. I’m not that big into sports games, but NBA Hangtime’s fast-paced and exaggerated take on the sport was very fun. After doing a little research a year or two ago, I realized that NBA Hangtime was developed by Midway, the same developer behind the super popular NBA Jam. This alleviated the grief I had whenever I’d hear people callout NBA Jam so fondly, but not NBA Hangtime.

I guess once Midway stopped developing the series (and created NBA Hangtime) the series went through a long period of staleness. That changed last year when Electronic Arts released the critically acclaimed NBA Jam for the Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. This year they have a follow-up in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, a sequel appearing on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. NBA Jam: On Fire Edition was developed by EA Canada and published by EA Sports this week on XBLA and PSN.

The demo only had two teams: the Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat, a familiar match up.

These sorts of video games are always better when you have another person so I was lucky that when I decided to play the demo for NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, I had a friend over. We only had a few minutes of gameplay so we had to get acquainted with the controls quickly. I was a little overwhelmed at first, but once I realized the movements I should focus on I was much more comfortable. Trying to steal the ball, blocking shots, using turbo, this was all familiar to my friend and I, and it seemed more effective than it used to be.

Once we got used to the controls we became effective at defense, but also offense. We took many jump shots and began learning the timing necessary to hit three pointers. But it’s not NBA Jam without outlandish dunks and On Fire Edition delivers. We saw many different dunks, but they repeated often; we were only able to play as the Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat so I wonder if some dunks are character or team specific.

The game looked really nice. The character models looked like their real-world counterparts with the exception of their cartoonish proportions. Everyone had an oversized head which conveyed expressions very well, especially during dunks. The announcer is another memorable part of the past games and again, On Fire Edition doesn’t disappoint.

Okay, now you guys are just showing off.

NBA Jam: On Fire Edition was a riot. My friend and I played three matches; the first was very close, the next game my friend blew me out, but I blew him out in the final game. EA Canada basically took the NBA Jam format and updated everything around it. NBA Jam: On Fire Edition appears to be just as fun as the past games and well worth the fifteen dollar price tag.

Battlefield 3 is going to be a big game. That goes without question. I could give this game a 0/10 and it would still sell millions upon millions of copies. Luckily, BF3 is a great game with some of the best graphics you will ever see with some intense action scattered throughout the entire experience. The story aspect of the game is very reminiscent of another recent first person shooter (Black Ops) in that it starts out in a flash forward interrogation. US Marine Sergeant Blackburn recalls missions against the PLR. So, in true fashion, you go and play through everything he recalls (even moments he wasn’t there for) leading up to his capture. One downside to this type of storytelling is that where other games would give you brilliant cinematics showing tons of destruction and really cool action effects, you just get told of things that happened by Blackburn. It definitely hurt the overall story of the game but luckily, that isn’t why you play a Battlefield game. You play it for the instense action and the feeling of truly being a soldier. We’ll get to the action in a minute but first off, the game is stunning. While the game does prompt you to download up to 2 GB of HD-content, it is a must. That Texture Pack turns the game from a great looking game to an amazing looking game. Basically, Battlefield’s HD-pack works similar to what RAGE had done with big installs but big pay-off. Now, you will notice some hallways that are just not up to snuff compared to the rest of the game. Lucky for us, these moments are infrequent but still a little annoying. Otherwise, the guns look beautiful and the character models themselves are some of the best I have ever seen. The models are especially shown when you are doing a close up quick time event to kill the enemy. Overall, the single player campaign is a great experience. Anyone familiar with the franchise, or anyone who played the beta, will feel at home with the way the game handles. It feels and controls just how you want from a first person shooter and the intense action packed sequences that you experience throughout the game keep you playing all the way through. The majority of the missions are played out as part of a military squad going through various battlefields and cities that will all have signs of damage once you have left. I even found the squad based parts to e very humanizing. Injuries become very apparent at the beginning of the game and carry on throughout. You really do get attached to all of the characters you take control of. The different characters all have different outcomes to their stories. I won’t give away much but if you played the very first Modern Warfare, you know how one of people will die. As for the other guys, you’ll just have to play the game to see what happens to them. What really differentiates Battlefield from Call of Duty are the inclusion of vehicles… and less zombies. If it weren’t for those vehicles, the game wouldn’t achieve as high level of awesome as it does. You will get to take control of tanks to complete destroy your enemies which makes you feel extremely powerful. Others have you in control of jets and while not as great as the air combat from the most recent Ace Combat, are better than I was expecting from a game that doesn’t really focus on it. There are also lots of breathtaking moments that you’ll experience throughout. When you encounter the T-90 tank and all seems lost when the building collapses, is just video gaming at its best. Mix that with earthquakes happening all around and helicopters crashing into buildings and you will be visually stimulated all the way through. At the end of the single player campaign, you are left satisfied. While it is nothing ground breaking, you will enjoy it and want to replay it on a harder difficulty after you tackle the enormous multiplayer offerings. Sadly, you won’t get to replay it for a while because the multiplayer will have you playing for hundreds of hours. As with all first person shooters, the bread and butter is the multiplayer. While a lot of people were disappointed by the beta, the final product is a huge improvement. I could easily find myself playing this game for months to come and it may even let me skip over Modern Warfare 3. Being in the gunner seat for a tank or a jet in multiplayer is just pure fun. While other FPS’s don’t let you get into vehicles, Battlefield 3 wants you to jump into a vehicle and go and raise hell. DICE just really knows how to make an online multiplayer game fun. As opposed to the single player where nearly everything is scripted so you don’t get that true so of scope, it completely changes in multiplayer. While you are running between a friendly tank and an enemy tank, you have no idea if that enemy tank is going to fire on you or destroy your tank in a huge blast. Couple that with seeing jets dog-fighting in the skies above you as you are just trying to kill someone with a machine gun and you really get the sense that you are part of a larger battle. For the smaller portions of the MP, when you are in the middle of a huge battle and have to run and heal a teammate, your heart will race. Similarly, capturing certain objective points is just as fun as ever. Since the game isn’t officially released yet, the servers do reset after a few matches. While annoying, it does keep people on an even playing field when the offical release happens on Tuesday. Essentially, Battlefield 3 is an amazing game. It has a great single player experience mixed with a perfect online multiplayer experience. People have been wondering if Battlefield 3 was rushed to beat the release date for Modern Warfare 3 but this is a complete game and could end up setting a new standard for graphics on the consoles. The Good: Amazing graphics, great single player, even better multiplayer. The Bad: Rare low-res textures, nothing groundbreaking (but it’s still extremely fun and polished) Score: 9.5/10

For something that looks so amazing with the detail cranked up, if these are legit those recommended specs are indeed a little steep. The minimums, though? Not bad. Unless you’ve got an old graphics card that can’t do DirectX 10. But then, there’s always a game that comes along which forces people to upgrade, and this may well be it.

Seeing as these appeared on a retailer listing and not as part of an official announcement, we’ve contacted EA for confirmation on these, and will update if we hear back.

“We’re chatting,” confirms Cloud gaming company

OnLive believes that if Sony and MS were to integrate its Cloud service on PS3 and Xbox 360, they would “make great consoles”. The Californian firm made waves at E3 earlier this month by showing off its new controller, which connects to OnLive’s servers via most modern TVs and tablets wirelessly. It demoed a range of games playing glitch-free on iPad, including Gearbox’s Borderlands and Ubisoft’s From Dust. The tech has been officially backed by major software publishers such as Warner and EA. However, OnLive is yet to seal an affiliation with any traditional hardware manufacturer, locking it out of access to platform-exclusive content – and a big chunk of the modern gaming audience. When we asked OnLive VP of Engineering Joe Bentley if the company could see its service working with Microsoft and Sony’s systems in future – rather than just bypassing them – he said: “Absolutely, they would make great consoles. Our controller is a hybrid between a PS3 controller and an Xbox controller. It’s all compatible, it would just work. There are OnLive guys chatting [Sony and MS], but we’ll see where it goes. But it would absolutely work, we’re ready to work with everybody. He added: “What people are realising and waking up to is everything could be a console, why shouldn’t you be able to take your game everywhere. I think the timing of this is perfect. When I joined the company I didn’t think it was going to pan out this way. “I give lectures at university and I tell people that finally the internet has grown to be fast enough, and that it’s really the age of the SOC; the System-On Chips that you find in the iPad, the snapdragon. They’re making these magical smartphones and tablets take off in a huge way. “It makes you use your imagination: what would you do with faster Internet and these SOCs in TVs? It will soon be in everything up to refrigerators. This is what we came up with – turning everything into a console, not taking compromised gaming like Zynga or whatever but fully-fledged gaming with you. “It has to be instant, because the reality is we have a very short amount of time. The reason mobile gaming has taken off is because you can occupy your time at the bus stop or whatever. The limitations of those games, though, are that the entertainment only goes so far. Why compromise that experience? “LA Noire is a fabulous, wonderful story and you could sit there for weeks exploring it in different ways. Why not be able to take that with you and continue the story? It’s like a good book.” According to Bentley, Valve “really likes OnLive” and conversations are taking place between the firms about working closer together. OnLive’s Cloud Gaming service is due to launch in the UK this autumn. BT has the exclusive rights to bundle OnLive together with its broadband service offerings in the UK, although customers will also have the option to order directly from OnLive to run over any UK ISP.
